What Is Probate?

Probate is the legal process through which ownership of a deceased person’s property is transferred to their beneficiaries. During probate, the executor named in the will works with the court to:

• Verify that the will is valid
• Identify and inventory the deceased’s assets
• Determine the value of those assets
• Pay outstanding debts and taxes
• Distribute remaining property according to the instructions in the will

Probate ensures that an estate is settled lawfully and that assets are transferred to the proper beneficiaries.
