Nicholas Hummer

Obituary of Nicholas Hummer

Nicholas Hummer, 88, a lifelong resident of Oxford, NJ has passed into the comforting arms of the Lord. The son of the late Andrew and Sophie (Trush) Hummer, Nick was an affirmation of all that was good. He was a resident of Oxford all his life. Whether he was playing quoits at the Oxford Fire Hall or baseball in the Local Leagues, Nick was always someone you could count upon. There are more than a few bridges and walls that his labor produced when he was a youth. A drive through the back roads with Nick was an educational experience as well as a lesson in the ways of the CC Camps. Military:veteran of WW II with the Army Air Corps, Nick spent his time as a driver in the North African and European Campaigns. Upon his discharge, he returned to his first love, the town of Oxford. He purchased his home there and became the faithful and generous caregiver for his Mother until her passing. Concurrently, he worked full-time at the Oxford Textile where he became the head shipping clerk and remained so until his retirement in 1983. Memberships:Nick’s generosity and compassion to his friends and extended family was an indication of the true nature of this kind and gentle man. He gave us all so much in life thus we must honor him now. He will be greatly missed by those that loved and cherished his presence and humor. A life member of Saint Rose of Lima church as well as the Oxford VFD, he was also a past member of the Washington Moose and Elks clubs. Survivors: A life-long bachelor, Nick or the “Chief” as he was affectionately known, had many young people that looked up to him as their mentor and friend. His impact on their lives will serve them well and for that they are better adults to have known him. His nephew Lynn Pohl and his wife Nancy and many other family members survive him. As Baseball was Nick’s passion, it is fitting to note that he played well with a keen eye. He was seldom tagged out and now that he has rounded all the bases we know that the ultimate umpire has taken him into his embrace and told him he is finally home and safe.
