Mr. Johnson was an exceptional teacher, coach and human being. I was honored to have him as a coach, teacher, co-worker and mentor (WMC class of 1984). His help, especially during my senior year at WMC, was unconditional and uncompromising. Words cannot describe how important he was in the WMC community; the legacy and impact of his influence are felt all over this country and, I am confident, the world. Thank you, Mr. Johnson for making an amazing impact in the classroom, on the court and in our lives. You will be greatly missed but you will be remembered for being an exceptional man. I know God welcomed you lovingly and you may be challenging him now on equations and plays drawn up for the games going on in heaven! Thank you, thank you and thank you! Karin Peterson

Sorry for your loss. I had Bob as a teacher senior year. He knew I was going on to a tough school (University of Michigan) and made sure I was ready after having such an easy go up until his class. He touched many lives in ways you will never know.....WMCH 1984

Mr. Johnson not only had a profound impact on my experience at WMC, he prepared me for college expectations, taught me the value of hard work to earn my success, and has had an incredible impact on my career as an elementary and college educator.
I can so vividly recall the marble drop activity we prepared for and completed in class. Mr. Johnson's look of pride when all members of the class completed the task will forever be remembered. He set high expectations for all of his students, something many of us as high school students didn't necessarily embrace at the time. As a father and educator, I appreciate that Mr. Johnson was truly preparing me for my future, beyond WMC.
Rest in Peace Mr. Johnson.

I had Mr. Johnson for Geometry (WMCHS '78) and to this day, Geometry is one of my two favorite mathematical disciplines. Mr. Johnson had an engaging way of drawing out understanding from his students. I do not know of one student or faculty member who did not regard him well.
God bless you and God bless the Johnson family. Eternal repose and blessed memory.

Just this week at my bible study we were sharing our most influential teachers and I talked about Mr. Johnson. He was a very tough teacher, but he taught me about problem solving and convinced me that I could become an engineer. I know that I am one of many students he influenced towards STEM careers. Thanks Mr. Johnson and my condolences to his family. He was an exceptional teacher.

I wanted to express my condolences for your loss. I was a former WMC student of Mr Johnson. Math had never been an easy subject for me and Mr Johnson had a rep for being tough and strict. Relinquishing to the idea that I would struggle , I became pleasantly surprised. I got the math! The way he taught and interacted with me was the boost of confidence I needed. He did run a tight ship but instead of feeling like the dumb kid, he made me feel respected and encouraged me. I have only 3 teachers that impacted my life from my HS and Elementary days. He was one of them. He was sometimes loud and boisterous and other times he was all business. He was a wonderful man and teacher. Heaven has gained a glorious soul. Prayers to your family during this hard time. RIP Mr Jonhnson- Sincerely Lisa Melroy Zipko Class92

It's been a long time since school, but I do remember Mr. Johnson and know that his gift in teaching was all for the students, not for himself. I am so sorry for your loss.
God Bless You Mr. Johnson!

To the family of Mr Johnson.
I was so sad to hear of Mr Johnson's passing. I am a 54 year old graduate of WMCHS and former student. Mr Johnson taught me BASIC computer language in the late 1970s. We had a Tandy RadioShack TRS-80 computer, with a ticker tape printer. We had to save our program on audiotape if we didn't finish it in the 20 minutes we had signed up to use it.
Mr Johnson only taught me that one class, however he is the most influential teacher of my life. He opened my eyes to the wonder of computer programming, and he managed a classroom of students with a diversity of math levels so effortlessly. I'll never forget when he wanted to teach us how to program functions in BASIC. He taught us sine, cosine and tangent, however since some students had not had trigonometry, he quickly ran through how the formulas were derived. He did not say the word Trigonometry, or sine, cosine and tangent. We named the functions some random words, and I remember we used "Maxwell" as the name of the tangent function. This was all so that the students who never had trig would not be intimidated. We who had trig watched in amazement as he taught these functions in about 20 minutes, wishing it had been that easy when we had learned it in math honors. Towards the end of the class, he erased the function names on the board and wrote in sine, cosine and tangent. It was a great moment when kids realized they had followed along and understood TRIGONOMETRY. We then went on to learn to incorporate functions in BASIC.
The next day, we signed out a record player and someone brought in the record with the Beatle's song, "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." Mr Johnson surprised us all by allowing us to play it quite loudly in class. Along comes another teacher from next door, bursting into the room, assuming we had been left to our own devices, as Mr Johnson normally ran a tight ship in class. I remember her surprise that Mr Johnson had let us play the song - as surprised as we were!
I remember being freaked out because the fearsome Mrs McNally audited the BASIC class and sat in the back. Mr Johnson gave is a quiz that had line numbers but they were out of order, to see who would notice and go in number order than in chronological order. I remember Mrs McNally got it wrong and I was amazed and secretly delighted that I got it right. I had dropped her class the year before because I was so afraid of her that I could not sleep. And here i got the answer right and she didn't!
I also remember some of us made Mr Johnson a birthday cake. We actually lit candles on it in the room next door with the teacher's blessing and carried in to his room and sang HB to him. I am sure we wouldn't be allowed to light candles in school today.
We used to call him "REJ" because he had a monogrammed shirt with his initials on it.
I send my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Johnson. He has made a huge difference in the world through his teaching career, and left this world a lot better than it would have been without him. I will always be grateful to have been his student even if only for one semester, and I'll always remeber him fondly.
With love,
Alison Bradbrooke Visokay, WMCHS class of 1981

We will miss seeing Bob at church events. We loved to hear his voice, when he sang in the choir. Bob always took the time to ask about Dad. He was a fun guy. We are so sorry.
