Obituary of Shirley E Castner
Shirley Elaine (Silverthorn) Castner, 80, of Washington NJ, went to be with the Lord on July 9, 2016. She passed peacefully at Lopatcong Care Center, Phillipsburg. She was born in Wilson Borough, PA February 14, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Wilbur and Mary (Frome) Silverthorn. Shirley was married for 53 years to Gene Castner, her beloved husband, who predeceased her on October 5, 2007.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. She was a woman who feared the Lord and had a servant’s heart. She was full of the joy of life and made the world a better place. It was a joy to be in her company. She was a courageous woman who faced brain surgery, cancer and finally debilitating pain with amazing calm and dignity. A full moon over the ocean was her favorite vista.
She was a homemaker, but over the years she worked at various places, last employed at Cordis in Warrenville. She attended Faith Discovery Church in Washington.
Survivors, her loving children: a son Glen and his fiancé Johane of Palmer Twp, PA; four daughters, Sharon Ford and her husband Mark of Bangor, PA, Cheryl Tayburn of Washington Twp., PA, Connie Deemer and her husband Thomas of Forks Twp, PA, Mary Castner and her companion Sammie McGruder of Washington; and a brother Robert Silverthorn and his wife June, of Nazareth, PA, all surviving her.
Shirley is also survived by eight grandchildren: Walter, Justin, Thomas, Alexandria, Matthew, Stephanie, Sammie and Bryan, and six great grandchildren: Kaijen, Shatoh, Esabell, Christian, Lilly and Olivia; brother-in-laws Rev. Harrison Tilley, William Castner and his wife Anna; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter Sherry Lynn, grandson Jeremy, sisters Evelyn and Carol, brother Ronald, son-in-law Walt and sister-in-law Elsie.
Services: A calling hour will be on Wednesday, July 13 from 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. followed by a funeral service at Faith Discovery Church, Brass Castle Road in Washington. Interment will follow the Wednesday service at the Musconetcong Valley Cemetery, Hampton, NJ. The DeVoe Funeral Services, Inc., 136 West Washington Ave., Washington, NJ is in charge of her arrangements.
