I have fond and wonderful memories of Mrs. Bowen. She was a great English teacher and though she was not my teacher for my senior year, she made me feel right at home at Warren Hills. I only spent that one year there, but I grew attached to my Washington, NJ family. She always encouraged me to excel in my work and to study hard. She will truly be missed and my prayers and condolences to her family. May God bless you all and keep you strong during this time of beareavement.

Al and family,
I am so saddened to hear of Peggy's passing. I was just chatting about her with a former student of mine a couple of weeks ago! As everyone has already mentioned, Peg was a great teacher, very proud of her children and fiercely protective of those she cared about. I taught a class in her room one year and will never forget how she helped comfort my lower level students who were very frightened and bewildered by a lock down involving search dogs in the hallways. I still see a couple of those students in the community and they express their fondness of her to this day. She was an inspiration to us all - colleagues, students, friends. She will be missed. Prayers for you all.

Dear Alfred, Family, and Friends,
As I read through these condolences, I am especially moved by the words of her students. There's nothing that reaches a teacher's heart more than hearing directly from a student that she had made a difference in some way. Clearly, Peg touched lives.
I was a brand new teacher in Peg's English department at Warren Hills when I first met her. As soon as I spoke to her and watched her work with her students, I knew this woman would be one of my role models. Peg, really Mrs. Bowen to me for a number of years because of my great respect for her, approached her students with just the right amount of high standards, humor, and warmth. This approach became my own goal during my teaching career.
I hope Peg would be proud to hear that she made a difference in my life and as a result allowed me to pass her example to my own students.
I still hang a little blown glass candle ornament Peg gave me on my Christmas tree every year. Thank you, Peg, for that little bit of brightness and for your guidance.

I am very saddened to hear about this. Mrs. Bowen was the reason I graduated high school on time. She kept me after when ever I needed help and was determined to make sure I passed her class. I could even turn to her for help while in college.
I am sure she is missed by many.

Mrs. Bowen was the best teacher. She taught her students to think beyond Washington, NJ. She used to tease me about reading trashy romance novels and challenged me to expand to Canterbury Tales. I shared my favoritism of Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice, and her eyes lit up. We lived Brave New World, Shakespeare and 1984 in her class. To Kill A Mockingbird became another favorite of mine along with Catcher in the Rye. My world evolved, and I have visited England a few times (Including Jane Austen's grave) and wish I had shared those experiences with her and thanked her in person. A teacher seeks to make a differenced and even after she had been teaching a while, Mrs. Bowen still passionately engaged for each and every one of us. She wrote me a recommendation for college and I went off on a scholarship to a good one. The world loses a positive influence and heaven gains ones. I will now read another challenging book in her honor. My sympathies to her family. Thank you for sharing her with us.

As an adult I understand the value of people like Ms Bowen, and appreciate what teachers like her gave to us, at the most tumultuous point in our young lives. I wish i had though to find her to thank her for everything that she did for all of us at Warren Hills, but sadly this is the best i can do now.
Thank you for everything, and for caring about us crazy kids.
And I'm really sorry that I laughed during that holocaust video, it was Mingo's fault.

Dear Mrs Bowen, I will always remember your stroll into the classroom each day. Hands held waist high, chin in the air, your feet seemed to slow, quick-quick trot across the floor a bit like you were dancing. Then you’d turn and give us that stare that held long enough to terrify, until it melted into a right old grin. You made us recite Beowulf. In Old English. Aloud and one at a time in the hallway outside your classroom door, an impromptu performance for anyone walking by. It was terrifying, but taught us that language is alive and with time changes into something new, much like us. Thank you for all that you taught us. And to your family, who featured as some of the bravest heroes in your stories. Rest in peace.

Dear Al, Patty and Barbara,
I was so sorry to read of Peg's passing today in the paper. I have many fond memories of working with both Peg and Al at Warren Hills. We worked on the yearbook together for ten years and I enjoyed getting to know Peg in a different setting. One thing I especially appreciated about her was the way she looked out for you, Al. She was always concerned about your welfare, as you were concerned about hers. That had to be a great example to the students. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mrs. Bowen was my English teacher in 1991-92, and I loved her! She was so creative and I loved going to class. She really made learning fun! Since then, I've thought about her often, and in fact, just yesterday was talking to one of my daughters about her and one of her assignments (having to memorize & recite a Hamlet Monologue). The impact she had on my life was major, and I'm really very sad to hear of her passing. May her family be comforted by the wonderful memories they have of this wonderful person!

Dear Alfred, Patty, Barbara, and the rest of your family,
In addition to all the good works listed in the obituary, Peggy was a mentor to many young teachers, including me. When I first started at Warren Hills, she took me under her wing and I relied on her wisdom, sense of humor, and compassion for students all the years we worked together. One of the things she did that I will never forget was to anonymously purchase a pair of sneakers for one of our students who looked as if he'd never had anything new to wear in his life. She put them in a plain paper bag and had him paged to the office where one of the secretaries gave him the bag. He may have been bewildered, but he was wearing those shoes the next day.
She was almost like another grandparent to my son when he was little. She and Alfred built a little house for him out of a big box when they got a new washer or dryer. I still have the video Alfred took of my soon peeking out the windows of his cardboard playhouse.
I am so, so sorry.
