Obituary of Teresa M. Garland

Teresa M. Garland, age 73, of Oxford, NJ, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at Hackettstown Medical Center.  Teresa was born on August 31, 1947 in Phillipsburg, NJ to her loving parents, the late Jose and Maria C. Fernandez (Lopez).

Teresa was a life-long resident of Oxford, NJ.  She married her beloved husband of 53 years, Thomas E. Garland Sr., on April 23, 1967.  In 1973, Teresa was instrumental in assisting her husband and brother, Tony in the family business (Layman's Contracting) which is owned and operated by her family to this day.  Teresa retired after 32 years as a medical transcriber at Warren Haven Nursing Facility in Oxford. Teresa was a volunteer for the Oxford Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Oxford Emergency Squad for many years.

Teresa's family meant the world to her.  She was a proud part of her son Tommy’s pure stock race team, known as the “69 Race Team.” She got an absolute thrill out of watching him race.  She loved camping and enjoyed the many trips she took with her family and friends over the years.  Teresa was a very good cook and was always happy making meals for her family, extended family and friends. In her past time, she enjoyed crafting and crocheting. Teresa was a very caring, outgoing, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend and cherished second mother to her many nieces and nephews.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

Teresa is survived by her loving husband, Thomas E. Garland Sr.; son, Tony Garland and his wife Marie from Mt. Bethel, PA; daughter, Angela Garland and her significant other TJ Hookway of Oxford, NJ; daughter-in-law, Barbara Garland of Oxford, NJ; brother-in-law; Daniel Wright of Oxford, NJ; grandchildren, Britney Smith, Bobby Smith, Brandee Garland, TJ Garland, Jimmy Garland, Jackie Garland, Briana Garland, Donald Leeper, and Christina Williams; great-grandchildren, Thomas, Gannon, Dylan, Kara, Alivia, Haleigh, Collin, and Addison and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to her parents Teresa is predeceased by her son, Thomas E. Garland Jr.; brothers, Joseph “Pepe” Fernandez and his wife Miriam; Antonio “Tony” Fernandez and his wife Bonnie; and a sister, Maria “Chrissy” Wright.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family on Tuesday March 2, 2021 from 10:00 am until the start of her service at 12:00 pm at the Knoll-DeVoe Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 142 West Washington Avenue, Washington NJ 07882. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Oxford.
