Obituary of Marian Hampton

Marian Catharine Hampton died at her Washington, New Jersey home on the evening of June 9, 2012. She lived in Washington for over 63 years, moving there when her husband, Dr. John E. Hampton, joined a medical practice in Washington in 1949. Marian was born on August 8, 1921, the youngest of eight children born to Moses and Mary K. Kreider of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She was the last Kreider to be born on the Kreider Homestead on West Oak Street, which dates back to 1766. Her parents, brother, Warren , and sisters, Elizabeth, Vera, Esther, Rhoda, Martha, and Ruth preceded her in death. She was brought up in the Church of the Brethren faith. Marian attended a one room schoolhouse through eighth grade. She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1939 and from Lebanon Valley College in 1943. After graduation, she taught at Palmyra and Ridley Park high schools in Pennsylvania. Marian is survived by her husband of nearly 68 years, John Hampton, and her three daughters, Cynthia Lee of Washington, NJ, Jessica Miller and husband, Andrew, of Lebanon Township, NJ, and Joan Fraser and husband, Loran, of Alexandria, VA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Brian Lee, Jennifer Lee Knittel, Kate Miller, Laura Miller, Jessica Fraser Sotelo, Benjamin Fraser and her great-grandson, Jonathan Knittel. She was a devoted aunt to seven nephews, one niece, and their families. Marian was a 62 year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Washington, New Jersey where she served in many leadership capacities. She served as church Elder, helped found the church library, and served in various roles in the United Presbyterian Women. Marian was active in Girl Scouting, serving as troop leader, Neighborhood Chairwoman, and District Chairwoman. She helped establish Warren Hills Regional High School's chapter of the American Field Service. For many years, she was a regular visitor at Warren Haven and was a Meals- On- Wheels volunteer. In addition, she was a long time member of the Warren County Medical Society Auxiliary. Marian especially enjoyed books, birds, flowers, and music, as well as corresponding with her many friends and relatives. She will remain an inspiration to her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, Marian's sincere wish was for individual flowers be taken to home-bound or to nursing home residents. A memorial service for Marian C. Hampton will be held on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church, East Church Street, Washington, NJ.
